Teaching Degrees in Wyoming

Having just more than half a million residents, Wyoming is the nation’s least populous state. Still, there are many public school students who need a quality eduation – 89,476 of them, to be exact. To obtain a Wyoming teacher license means to work in mostly rural school districts, although some areas, like Cheyenne, will have larger schools.

Students looking for teaching schools in Wyoming have few choices in the state. In fact, only one public, four-year institution provides a program leading to teacher certification – the University of Wyoming. Regardless, it does an admirable job guiding students toward their Wyoming teacher certification.

University of Wyoming

Founded in 1886, UW is located in the town of Laramie, which is in the southeastern region of the state. Not only is the lone Wyoming teacher education program located in this area of the state, but so are some of the best teaching jobs, specifically in Cheyenne. The most popular major at UW, which accepts 95% of applicants, is elementary education and teaching. UW offers many undergraduate plans that lead toward a Wyoming teaching license. Elementary teacher candidates receive a major in elementary education with a concentration in creative arts, environmental studies, interdisciplinary early childhood, international education studies, or American cultural diversity. At the secondary level, students who complete the program will end up with two concurrent majors: one in secondary education and the other in their area or specialty. Candidates must first apply for acceptance into the Wyoming Teacher Education Program.
