How to Become a Teacher in Wyoming

Wyoming holds the claim of having the fewest residents of any state in the U.S., and with little ethnic variety. That translates to the state with the fewest public school students. Becoming a teacher in Wyoming might mean working in more rural, agrarian regions of the state, but these areas are still in need of quality teachers who find intrinsic reward in helping all of their students receive the education they deserve. If you are interested in becoming a Wyoming certified teacher, read on to discover how to obtain a Wyoming teaching license.

Education Requirements

The Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board licenses teachers in the state. To become licensed to teach in Wyoming, applicants must complete a teacher preparation program from an accredited institution that includes student teaching, earn a bachelor’s degree, and get an Institutional Recommendation for Licensure.

Wyoming Teaching Certification

To obtain certification in Wyoming, applicants must complete an approved educator preparation program from an accredited college or university that includes student teaching and leads to an Institutional Recommendation for Licensure, as well as a bachelor’s degree. A background check is also required. Some endorsement areas require testing. Professional development courses must be completed to renew a license.

Required Tests

The Praxis II subject tests are required for those seeking an initial endorsement in Elementary Education or Social Studies Composite. Applicants may also take an exam to demonstrate knowledge of the U.S. and Wyoming constitutions if they didn’t meet that requirement through coursework.

State Certification Reciprocity

Wyoming accepts certification from all other states if the requirements in the other state are equivalent to Wyoming’s licensing standards. An applicant must have completed an accredited teacher education program, completed supervised student teaching, and passed the required tests for the state where they hold a license.
