Teaching Degrees in Utah

Utah has several programs to help teachers prepare for their Utah teacher license, but each program has different strengths and areas of focus. Brigham Young University creates teachers with strong content area knowledge. The University of Utah prepares teachers to work in inner cities, while Utah State University helps elementary school teachers to recognize and address the differentiated learning needs of students. Weber State University provides support to student teachers during their first instructional classroom experience, so they can better instruct and develop standards-aligned curriculum.

Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University (BYU) features 41% of its classes with 20 students or less, despite the large size of the student body at 30,409 people. As U.S. News & World Report reports, BYU’s religiously inspired campus emphasizes traditional values. It also has a highly diverse campus, with three-fourths of the students speaking another language. The Teacher Education Department at BYU gives students guidance in pursuing a Utah teaching license. Its Secondary Education (7-12 Licensure) features many endorsements in content areas and focuses on the expecation that beginning teachers will not only possess subject mastery, but demonstrate mastery in teaching the subject.

University of Utah

The Urban Institute for Teacher Education at the University of Utah is a Utah teacher education program for teachers who recognize the benefits of educational equity through the redressment of the achievement gap. Licensure programs in elementary and secondary education allow teachers to add endorsements in teaching English as a Second Language. The University of Utah also offers Undergraduate Teacher Licensure Programs, in which a concentration of classes specific to a content area leads to a bachelor’s degree in an endorsable teaching subject. Upon successful completion of this program, the university will recommend candidates for licensure.

Utah State University

In keeping with the spirit of public universities, Utah State University is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the most affordable post-secondary schools in the state, while maintaining a high selection rate. The School of Teacher Education and Leadership reflects the state’s focus on public education by offering undergraduate degrees within the Elementary Education Program and the Secondary Education Program. Among teaching schools in Utah, there is a focus of elementary licensure programs and on the needs of special education within today’s classroom, both of which Utah State University addresses.

Weber State University

At Weber State University, education is one of the more sought-after degrees. The Teacher Education Department at Weber State University’s College of Education offers a licensure program where students can earn either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Art. Candidates can choose between the teaching areas of early childhood, elementary, secondary, or special education. Weber State University emphasizes student teaching, an important learning experience for candidates in any Utah teacher certification program.
