Utah’s data on teacher performance gives the state one of the most comprehensive state programs to guarantee teacher effectiveness. If someone wants to be a Utah certified teacher, there are a number of steps to take. Judging from the most recent accountabilty report, the state’s blueprint has succeeded. Utah continues to add resources to train excellent teachers, starting with the educational requirements of teachers, which is reflected in their pay schedules.
To become certified to teach in Utah, the State Office of Education requires that applicants have a bachelor’s degree and complete an approved college or university teacher preparation program. They must also pass the Praxis exams required for their certification area or areas and get a recommendation from their college or university.
Utah Teaching Certification
All teachers in Utah must have a baccalaureate degree, complete a teacher preparation program from a college or university approved by the Utah State Office of Education, and receive an institutional recommendation from the college or university. Applicants must also pass the Praxis tests required for their desired certification areas. Teachers in Utah may receive a basic, professional, or distinguished educator certificate, which last three, five, and seven years, respectively.
Teachers in Utah must pass the required Praxis for the grade level or content area in which they wish to be certified. More information about required tests can be found on the ETS website or the Utah State Office of Education website.
State Certification Reciprocity
Utah accepts certification from most other states, but out-of-state applicants must complete an application and meet Utah’s testing and other certification requirements. Out-of-state applicants must also complete a fingerprint background check and the Educator Ethics Review.
