Teaching Degrees in Oregon

A teacher education program must be approved by Oregon’s Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) in order to recommend graduates for an Oregon teaching license. Students who want to receive their education from a specific Oregon campus, but find it difficult to commute regularly to the campus, may benefit from online programs available through some teaching schools in Oregon. Students looking at schools to complete education requirements towards an Oregon teacher certification should investigate a school’s teaching programs, as some universities offer extended programs that lead to master’s-level certification in a content area. Four of the most significant teaching schools in Oregon include:

University of Oregon

The University of Oregon’s College of Education has been training teachers almost since the university’s 1872 inception. The teaching school received a 2012 ranking of 8th-best education school in America by U.S. News & World Report. During the 2011-12 school year, the College of Education had an enrollment of 681 students. Visionary educational initiatives enacted by the teaching school, such as the positive behavior support system, have been put in place by thousands of public schools across Oregon and the nation.

Eastern Oregon University

Eastern Oregon University is another state institution receiving national recognition that is approved to recommend graduates for an Oregon teacher license, receiving a Tier II ranking from U.S. News & World Report for the western region. Eastern Oregon University is one of the few state schools in Oregon’s state university system that offers the same tuition price for in-state and out-of-state students. The main education program offered by Eastern Oregon University’s College of Education is the elementary teacher education program, available to bachelor’s candidates through the Curriculum for Undergraduate Elementary School Teacher Education (CUESTE) program, or to graduate students through the school’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program.

Oregon State University

Oregon State University’s College of Education offers education programs at various levels, from bachelor’s degrees through doctoral studies in education. The school operates the grant-funded Free-Choice Learning Laboratory at the Hatfield Marine Science Center. A science and technology partnership between the university and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Science Media Group is producing educational videos to be used by high school science departments across the nation. The College of Education at OSU offers a number of online education programs as well, including a Master of Education and an ESOL/bilingual endorsement for those who want to teach English as a second language.

Western Oregon University

Western Oregon University’s College of Education has maintained its approved teacher education program status since originally being certified by the TSPC in 1954. It is also one of only eight schools offering an Oregon teaching education that has a nationally accredited teacher education program. WOU’s teaching school offers degree programs in K-12 teaching as well as health and special education.
