How to Become a Teacher in Ohio

The Ohio public school system employs more than 110,000 full-time teachers that serve nearly 2 million students across the state. While a high percentage of Ohio educators have earned master’s degrees due to previous state requirements for licensure renewal, current policy in the state’s 613 school districts requires only a bachelor’s degree in combination with state teacher certification. Education Requirements

Becoming a teacher in Ohio starts with the Ohio Department of Education’s website, as it is the licensing organization for teachers in the state. Ohio requires all of its teachers to hold a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher preparation program, pass state licensure examinations, and have completed 12 semester hours of reading (for certain licenses). Those teaching only pre-kindergarten may apply for a specialized teacher licensure after completing an associate’s degree. Ohio’s license structure can be viewed by clicking here.
