Teaching Degrees in New York

All students seeking New York teacher certification must first locate the best teaching schools in New York and determine which program would serve them best. New York has many colleges and universities from which to choose. Regardless, all teacher candidates must enroll in a teacher preparation program, pass the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations, and submit to fingerprinting in order to receive a New York teacher license.

Below are just four of the Empire State’s higher education institutions, all of which have well-regarded, state-approved teacher preparation programs. According to U.S. News & World Report, New York State boasts 54 schools with such programs, so if none of the following schools fit a student’s needs, she has many other options from which to choose.

CUNY Hunter College

Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, CUNY Hunter College was founded in 1870. It ranks number 34 on U.S. News & World Report‘s list of best regional universities in the North. Admission is highly selective, with only 25% of applicants gaining admittance. Hunter College’s New York teacher education differs from other schools in that to gain entrance into the School of Education, a student must already have an undergraduate degree, meaning their teacher preparation program leads to a master’s degree. Beyond this, candidates must provide two letters of recommendation and a 500-word statement of purpose. Programs include adolescent education (grades 7-12), bilingual education, childhood education in math and science (grades 1-6), dance (pre-K-12), literacy, music, and special education.

CUNY Queens College

Founded in 1937, Queens College is located in Flushing. Admission is rather selective, with 30% of applicants being admitted. Like Hunter College, Queens College’s New York teaching license program is primarily post-bachelor. The only undergraduate degree offered is in childhood education, grades 1-6, and can only be taken as a co-major. Beyond that, master’s degrees are available in teaching, education, or childhood education. An Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Education is also available.

St. John’s University

Located in Queens and founded in 1870, St. John’s University is a private Roman Catholic school open to students of all faiths. Like other New York schools, admission is rather selective. Education accounts for 6% of student studies. Unlike most programs, all students, regardless of whether they become elementary or secondary teachers, receive a Bachelor of Science in Education with a concentration in the discipline they plan on teaching. The B.S. Ed. in Secondary Education degree, for instance, offers concentrations in English, mathematics, physics, biology, social studies, and Spanish.

Syracuse University

Ranking number 62 on U.S. News & World Report‘s list of the best national universities, Syracuse is a private university founded in 1870. Only around 60% of all applicants gain entrance into the school. Its School of Education claims to have “pioneered the inclusion movement in the United States, making way for all learners to participate fully in mainstream classrooms and other inclusive learning environments.” Undergraduate degrees include art education, English education, mathematics education, music education, physical education, science education, and social studies education.
