Teaching Degrees in New Hampshire

All individuals who wish to earn a standard New Hampshire teacher license must hold bachelor’s degrees. While a degree in education is not required, New Hampshire teacher education can still include education course work, which will provide valuable preparation for taking control of a classroom. In addition, it will certainly streamline the process of having a New Hampshire teacher certification accepted out of state.

Since New Hampshire is a relatively small state, there are only a few colleges with teaching programs. The four largest teaching schools in New Hampshire are Franklin Pierce University, Rivier University, Keene State College, and New England College. Even though earning a teaching degree from one of these schools is not necessary to apply for a New Hampshire teaching license, each school prepares its students for teaching in unique ways. Keep reading to take a deeper look at each of these schools.

Franklin Pierce University

At Franklin Pierce University, the teacher education program is supported by the College of Behavioral Science. At Franklin Pierce, education can only be selected as a second major. This means that a student’s primary focus is strengthening their proficiency in the subject that they will teach, with a secondary focus on education. Students are invited to join the Education Club, which partners with area schools to enrich a student’s professional development and fieldwork experience. To apply, prospective students should submit transcripts, references, test scores, and an essay to the school’s admissions office.

Rivier University

Rivier University (RU) offers undergraduate degrees in education and boasts an extensive graduate department that has more than 30 programs for current teachers and teachers-to-be. RU has taken steps to ensure that its students are prepared for the challenges presented by technology in the classroom. The school has applied for numerous grants and funds to make these technologies accessible to their students. According to RU’s undergraduate education department, the school has a 100% pass rate on national certification exams and a nearly 100% job placement rate.

Keene State College

The education program at Keene State College grants undergraduate degrees in early childhood development, elementary education, secondary education, and special education- elementary. The program is built around a four-point conceptual framework that produces teachers who explore and appreciate the nature of teaching, demonstrate ethical and professional behavior, approach issues holistically, and use education as a means to improve the world. While working toward their teaching degree at Keene State, students will simultaneously attend liberal arts classes based on the subject they want to teach.

New England College

The education department at New England College offers degrees in educational studies, elementary education, physical education, secondary education, and special education. Interestingly, the educational studies degree is a non-certification track program for students who are interested in education but who do not intend to teach. When reviewing applications from first-year students, New England College will recalculate their GPA to focus mainly on liberal arts subject matter. While GPA is not the only evaluative criterion, students who were not strong candidates at some schools might be more eligible for admission at New England College.
