How to Become a Teacher in Maryland

The Maryland State Department of Education has been nationally recognized as having one of the best public school programs in the United States. In 2012, the state ranked first overall for both Advanced Placement testing scores and by the annual Education Week independent survey of state education departments. Maryland’s education department has been ranked first overall in both areas for four consecutive years. Those interested in obtaining a Maryland teaching license should be aware of the state’s rigorous certification standards.

Education Requirements

Those who hope to become a teacher in Maryland need to meet all education requirements defined by the Maryland State Department of Education. All prospective Maryland teachers need to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and complete a state-approved teacher preparation program before they can qualify for certification.

Maryland Teaching Certification

To qualify for certification, all candidates need to have a bachelor’s degree and complete a state-approved teacher preparation program. Alternative teaching certification programs are also available for graduates and professionals who have a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field and want to make a career change.

Required Tests

Maryland educators are required to pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST), which covers reading, writing, and mathematics. Maryland will accept qualifying scores on the SAT, ACT, or GRE in place of taking the PPST. Candidates also need to take licensure exams in the specializations they wish to teach.

State Certification Reciprocity

Out-of-state applicants who want to teach in Maryland have a few teaching certification options. Professional certificates are available to teachers of varying backgrounds and experience levels, but additional testing or training may be required.
