How to Become a Teacher in Maine

Although enrollment has declined steadily since the 1970s, public schools in Maine educated more than 186,000 students during the 2010-2011 school year. Elementary-level standardized test results have suffered in recent years, but Maine’s high school graduation rate of nearly 83% is above average compared to the rest of the country. Prospective teachers should understand that Maine teaching license certification is regulated by the state’s Department of Education. A Maine certified teacher is required to obtain at least a bachelor’s-level degree before applying for his or her initial certificate to teach at schools in the state.

Education Requirements

To become a teacher in Maine, candidates need to complete all education requirements as defined by the Maine Department of Education. Maine educators must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and must complete a state-approved teacher preparation program.

Maine Teaching Certification

All educators who work in Maine must be certified to teach in the state. To do so, candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and complete a state-approved teacher preparation program. Graduates who have a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field and want to become teachers can complete one of the many alternative certification programs offered here.

Required Tests

To qualify for initial certification, all Maine educators must pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST), which covers reading, writing, and mathematics, as well as the content area exam and the appropriate Principles of Learning and Teaching exam.

State Certification Reciprocity

Out-of-state applicants who plan to teach in Maine must submit a copy of their valid teaching certificate, transcripts, assessment scores, and other necessary documentation to the Maine Department of Education. Qualified applicants may be eligible for a provisional license, but additional education and testing may be required.
