Teaching Degrees in Louisiana

In order to receive a Louisiana teaching license, a student must first acquire a bachelor’s degree. While a bachelor’s degree in any field will satisfy the education prerequisites for enrollment within a Louisiana teacher education program, many universities within the state offer education-related degrees that will allow a future educator to apply for a Louisiana teacher license upon graduation.

Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Louisiana Tech University are among the four largest teaching schools in Louisiana. This article will highlight the available programs at each of these universities.

Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge

The College of Human Sciences and Education at Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge offers two undergraduate degree programs that lead to certification: Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood (Grades P-3) and Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education Grades (1-5). Several graduate programs are also offered, including master’s degrees in special education, secondary education, and educational leadership.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette

The University of Louisiana’s College of Education currently has more than 17 undergraduate degrees in education, including the core areas of early childhood, elementary, and middle education, as well as numerous specialized degrees in secondary education. Numerous graduate degrees are also available. Additionally, the college offers many certification courses for individuals who seek Louisiana teacher certification but already possess a bachelor’s degree in a non-education related field. This school partners with seven school districts to provide students with hands-on teaching experience during their education.

Southeastern Louisiana University

Southeastern Louisiana University’s College of Education and Human Development is geared towards recruiting graduate students who want to change careers. It does not currently offer undergraduate degrees in education, but does offer graduate degrees in educational leadership, including a doctoral program, as well as alternative certification programs for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in another academic area. Many additional certification courses intended for teachers are also available for licensed teachers.

Louisiana Tech University

Louisiana Tech’s College of Education has a wide array of course offerings for prospective and current educators. These include undergraduate degrees in all the core areas of certification for Louisiana, graduate degrees, and non-degree programs that also lead to certification, which are intended for teachers who wish to supplement their current certificates with ancillary endorsements.
