Teaching Degrees in Kentucky

In order to receive a Kentucky teaching license, students must obtain a bachelor’s degree within their desired academic field of instruction and complete one of the state’s many approved Kentucky teacher education programs.

Among the largest teaching schools in Kentucky are the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Western Kentucky University, and Eastern Kentucky University. This article will highlight the various Kentucky teacher certification programs in each of these universities to help students determine which institution’s curriculum might be best suited for their career goals.

University of Kentucky

The University of Kentucky’s College of Education currently has program graduates working in all 50 states and in more than 25 countries. The College of Education offers a number of education-related bachelor’s degrees that qualify students for a Kentucky teacher license. These include programs specializing in elementary school, middle school, and special education, as well as specialized degrees like music education, art education, and health promotion. Some other educational degrees are also offered, but students who are interested in these should know that they require additional coursework for certification. Numerous graduate degrees are also offered at the University of Kentucky.

University of Louisville

University of Louisville’s College of Education and Human Development does not specifically offer education degrees, but does have numerous programs for Initial Teacher Certification that may be taken while students pursue bachelor’s degrees in other fields. Undergraduate offerings include early childhood, early elementary, middle school, and secondary school certification programs, as well as various music, art, foreign language, and special education programs. Postgraduate degrees and advanced certification course work are also available. The University of Louisville leads the state in percentage of graduates who have scored within the top 15% nationally on the Praxis II content examinations.

Western Kentucky University

Western Kentucky University’s School of Teacher Education offers undergraduate education degrees. These include the standard offerings of early childhood, elementary, middle and secondary school, and special education degrees as well as business and marketing, science, math, and interdisciplinary early childhood education programs. These programs may also be completed as postbaccalaureate certification-only programs.

Eastern Kentucky University

Eastern Kentucky University’s College of Education has the highest graduation rate of any department within the university, bolstered by the various undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs that can lead to teacher certification. These degrees are offered in subjects like American sign language and interpretation, counseling and educational psychology, curriculum and instruction, special education, and educational leadership and policy studies. Various endorsement programs for teachers looking to supplement their initial certification are also available here.
