How to Become a Teacher in Indiana

Indiana serves more than 1 million students in the public school system and employs more than 60,000 teachers. To be counted among those teachers, students must earn an Indiana teaching license. The process is overseen by the Office of Educator Licensing and Development to make certain that those with an Indiana teaching license are well qualified. Keep reading to find out more information about becoming a teacher in Indiana.

Education Requirements

All students interested in gaining Indiana teacher certification are required to hold a bachelor’s degree in a teaching concentration, such as history or English. A state-approved teacher preparation program must also be completed. The content of a preparation program is determined largely by the institution at which it is being offered and can include fieldwork, research, or student teaching. All state-approved teaching schools use the Transition to Teaching program, which prepares students who lack education course work for the challenges of handling a classroom.

Indiana Teaching Certification

All prospective teachers must have a state-issued certification to teach in Indiana. To qualify for licensure, Indiana candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher preparation program, and pass a basic skills test. The Indiana Department of Education has also approved several alternative licensure routes to accommodate prospective teachers with non-education backgrounds and high-need school districts.

Required Tests

Indiana teachers are required to take and pass the Praxis Series Tests. The Praxis I (PPST) is a basic skills test that covers reading, writing, and mathematics. Additional assessments/routes may supplement basic skills competency, such as a master’s degree and specified ACT/SAT scores. Educators also need to pass the Praxis Series II tests for the content areas they wish to teach. For more information about teacher testing, see the Indiana Department of Education’s website.

State Certification Reciprocity

Regardless of where you received your teaching credentials or initial licensure, all educators must hold a valid (unexpired) Indiana license to teach in the state. Out-of-state applicants with a valid teaching license are evaluated based on credentials and any license deficiencies. Individuals who meet the minimum requirements may be eligible for a reciprocal permit to legally teach for one year while completing any deficiencies. However, reciprocity does not mean Indiana will waive any requirements or deficiencies to issue an educator license.
