Higher Education Online Teaching Degree
Higher education, or postsecondary, professionals work with students in 2-year community colleges, 4-year colleges and universities, and specialty training institutes and schools; job titles include lecturers, instructors, professors, graduate teaching assistants, and vocational or technical teachers. School administrators may also be higher education professionals. Higher education positions require at least a bachelor’s degree, and many require a master’s degree and doctorate degree as well. Higher education teachers prepare and deliver lectures and exams, and many also advise students and publish materials in articles or books. Post-secondary teachers at the university level also often perform large amounts of research in their specialty area. Higher education professionals are also expected to keep up to date on developments and trends in their field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that median annual earnings of postsecondary teachers in 2006 was $56,120; the lowest-paid 10% earned less than $27,590, and the highest-paid 10% earned more than $113,450. On average faculty at 4-year institutions earn higher salaries than do those who teach in 2-year schools. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there were approximately 1.7 million postsecondary teachers in 2006 and estimates there will be 2,054,000 in 2006 for 23% growth. The BLS characterizes this as "much faster than average," but predicts many opportunities will be part-time or non-tenure-track positions, which often carry not only lower salaries but also fewer benefits.
