Individuals interested in becoming a teacher in Georgia will need to satisfy educational and certification requirements set forth by the Georgia Department of Education. Read on to learn more about what it takes to achieve Georgia teacher certification.

Education Requirements

Students interested in obtaining a Georgia teaching license must first earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Most students typically choose education majors or subject-based majors such as history or English. Prospective educators must also complete a state-approved teacher training program. Initial teacher preparation programs are typically offered by universities, community colleges and school districts as well as online teaching schools in Georgia. Lastly, students must pass the appropriate certification exam for the subject area they wish to teach.

Georgia Teaching Certification

All public school educators in Georgia except substitute teachers are required to have a certificate from the GaPSC. There are six types of renewable or non-renewable certification for educators, Teacher, Service, Leadership, Permit, Technical, Specialist, and Paraprofessional.

Required Tests

To be able to teach in Georgia, candidates must pass the appropriate GACE assessment for certification. All candidates must pass the GACE Content Assessment and pass or exempt the GACE Basic Skills Assessment.

State Certification Reciprocity

Georgia is a member of the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) and has signed the Interstate Agreement with all other states for all certificate types, including teacher certification. The GaPSC website provides a complete list of documents required from out-of-state candidates for teaching certification.
